So I watched The Wrestler and this weekend recap

leave a comment »

So I went to go see The Wrestler with my friend Libby. I knew this was not a “sun filled” type of movie, but GOOD GOD, this movie is HEAVY. I’m still not sure that Mickey Rourke’s performance was better than Sean Penn’s in MILK, but then again, I haven’t seen Frank Langella in Frost/Nixon. I only have about a week to see Frost/Nixon, The Reader, Doubt…then I’ll be ready for Sunday night ;-)

I’m no weather channel, but it rained like a bitch this week(end) and it must have been a record downpour. I agree with all those people who are sick & tired of newscasters saying “but we need the rain”.

Valentine’s was pretty sweet, had a blast and don’t remember most of the night. I blame it on the sugar overdose of Jen’s awesome cupcakes. I also think we sang some Journey, evidence:

Its late, but I just want to say that I’m pretty excited that my Dad is coming to San Francisco today (Thursday) to participate in a panel discussion for the Bay Area premiere of the documentary A Class Apart. This documentary was filmed by Carlos Sandavol, who ‘s film FARMINGVILLE won the special jury prize at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival. The documentary was supported in part by my father’s upcoming book “White But Not Equal”. (He was on the advisory board for the movie). So they’re showing it at the Embarcadero Center tonight (Thursday, February 12th)

The movie premiers on PBS on February 23rd. Hopefully you can check it out! And the book is available on Amazon. Order it here.

Because of this event, I won’t be able to attend Twestival. But I hope you can find a way to support it, as its a really special event. You can find out more info on the website (linked above) or on my blog post on What Gives!?

Cadillac Records, not so much a review

Cadillac Records

Cadillac Records

If you’re a music history buff, it might not be up to your standards. Though if you loved “La Bamba”, then you’ll be OK! I am fascinated by music and specifically the story behind it, so yes, I’m always hooked on those cheesy behind the music type of shows. So CR is just that, a spectacular behind the music with really great renditions of classic songs. Songs that you’ve probably heard many times. I came home and downloaded the soundtrack because there’s just something special about cover songs that are done well :)

On a side note: I am excited about Notorious and so glad I actually took time away from stuffing my face with popcorn to watch the trailer.

Because sometimes, its just easier to see your life played out in “non real life”, right?

Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist (not so much a review)

leave a comment »

I decided to take the day off and go check out “Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist”, which opened today. I didn’t take the day off specifically for the movie, rather I’m just sick of work and shit. But the movie was on my list because I really love Michael Cera (Arrested Development is so underrated) and Kate Dennings looks like the type of girl I’d have a crush (just being honest). I’ m not a movie critic, because if I was I’m sure I could be a total a-hole and find things wrong with this movie. But that’s only if I was a critic ;-)

I totally LOVED this movie, and I rarely love much things nowadays, except for red wine and Entourage. But I was smiling the whole time during the movie, amongst many laughs and thoughts of “shit, I’ve said something stupid like that before”. This is a perfect movie for those of you who lived through the days of mixtapes (don’t call it a comeback) back in the late 80′s and early 90′s. There’s nothing more self exposing than creating a mix for someone, friend, family or lover. Usually you make them during the courtship…which leaves you even more naked than you think.

So back to the movie, definitely give it 2 glasses of Malbec up, and the soundtrack definitely kicked ASS. And now I find myself looking for my “Nora“.
